Why Install Truck Running Boards?

The first thing to know is that not all SUVs, trucks, and Jeeps need running boards. Can you get into your vehicle easily without running boards? Can a shorter person or a child? If the answer is 'no' to both of these questions, then you need running boards.

These aren't the only reasons to install running boards on your truck, Jeep or SUV. Did you know that running boards protect your vehicle from rock chips and gravel scratches? You're more likely to go on rough terrain if you own one of these vehicles; many truck drivers are off-road enthusiasts.

If the road you're on is dirt or gravel, you can be certain that rocks and road debris will be shooting up and colliding with the bottoms and sides of your vehicle doors scratching your finish and taking off paint chips. 



Running boards also keep the inside of your truck, Jeep, or SUV cleaner. When you step onto the running board, you can clean off your boots, or even remove them and change them for a clean set of footwear. This comes in really handy in muddy locations!

What Are the Types of Running Boards?

Something to remember when researching running boards is that not all types are available for all makes and models of truck, Jeep, or SUV. You have to purchase one that is made specifically for your vehicle.

When you buy your running boards you can get them with different step widths, but the length will be determined by the length of the vehicle. This is because the running boards go from the front wheel well to the back wheel well.

You have the option of different materials. You can get running boards made of fiberglass and plastic. These are the cheaper ones with a lower weight capacity of up to 350 pounds. 

The higher quality ones made of aluminum or stainless steel can have a weight capacity of 500 pounds. You have to decide what is best for your needs.

Running boards can have different finishes as well. Anything from chrome-plated to black powder-coated to color-matched painted ones is available. You can even get rubber surface pads for better traction or lighting for a cool look.



There are also non-traditional running boards like retractable running boards. These ones can have a motor connected to the ignition and will extend and retract. Another non-traditional running board is the rocker bar type that's like a nerf bar you can step on.

Installing Your Running Boards

Installing your running boards depends on the make and model of your vehicle. Most requirements and steps for truck accessories installation are fairly uniform and we'll try to make this as straightforward as possible

Step 1: Assemble Your Equipment

First, you should unbox your new running boards and make sure all the parts are present. Use the manufacturer's list and check off the hardware before beginning. Read the installation instructions. Yes, this is an essential step.

Now, you need to collect the following:



• Creeper or padded mat
• Safety glasses and gloves
• Box end wrenches
• Ratchet and socket set

Step 2: Locate Factory Holes in Your Vehicle and Install Bolt Plate

The bolt plate is the part that holds the brackets in place. The factory drilled holes may have rubber plugs in them, depending on the make.



If your vehicle does not have factory drilled holes, you will have to drill them and the instructions will tell you how to do this. The important thing is, when you drill the holes, they must line up with the bolts on the running board.

Step 3: Attach the Brackets

Depending on your vehicle's make, model, year, and cab size, the number of brackets will vary. Begin with the front bracket. Attach your brackets finger-tight as you may need to do some adjustments later. Be sure you use the correct bolts, nuts, and washers.

Step 4: Install the Running Boards

Place your running boards on the brackets. Be careful to align everything. Make sure the boards are centered correctly to not interfere or be a barrier to anything. 

Now attach the running boards to the brackets using the provided hardware. Do any readjusting and leveling at this point. Now is the time to tighten all the nuts on the brackets once you're sure everything is correctly centered and positioned.

Step 5: Finishing touches

If your running boards have lights, you now have to wire these up using the wiring harness. Run the wires to your truck's electrical system. Be sure to check the instruction manual to be sure you're doing it correctly.



If your running board is retractable, there is a motor you'll have to wire to your ignition system once the hardware is installed. Once again, it is essential to follow all manufacturer instructions.

The steps outlined above are fairly straightforward. Truck or Jeep accessories installation is not too difficult and experienced DIY enthusiasts can generally pull it off.
